ERP for Manufacturing: NetSuite vs SAP vs Odoo for Makers and Producers

Manufacturing companies have specific ERP requirements that go well beyond standard financial management. If your business builds products, you need BOM management, production orders, MRP, and ideally shop floor visibility. Here is how the three main mid-market options compare for manufacturers.

Manufacturing-Specific Requirements

Bill of Materials (BOM): A structured list of all components, sub-assemblies, and raw materials needed to manufacture a finished product, with quantities and unit of measure at each level.

Work Orders / Production Orders: Instructions to manufacture a specific quantity of a finished good, consuming components from the BOM and tracking labor and machine time.

MRP (Material Requirements Planning): The engine that calculates what materials you need, when you need them, and when to place purchase orders based on sales orders, production schedules, and current stock levels.

Routing / Shop Floor Control: Sequential steps in the production process, machine and labor assignments, and tracking of actual vs planned production time.

Quality Management: Inspection checkpoints, non-conformance tracking, and supplier quality history.

NetSuite Manufacturing

NetSuite''s manufacturing module covers the essentials well: multi-level BOM, work orders, work order completion with component consumption, and basic MRP. WIP (work in progress) tracking is available. It handles light-to-medium discrete manufacturing effectively.

Limitations: NetSuite''s shop floor control is less mature than SAP B1''s, and complex process manufacturing (batch manufacturing with variable yields) requires customization. MRP can be slow to calculate for large item master and transaction volumes.

SAP Business One Manufacturing

SAP B1 has the most mature manufacturing module of the three. MRP is fast and reliable, production orders are tightly integrated with procurement, and the quality management module is comprehensive. Machine center scheduling and capacity planning are native features. This is the choice for companies with complex discrete or process manufacturing.

SAP B1 is also the most complex to implement in the manufacturing modules — plan for a longer project and more specialist partner involvement.

Odoo Manufacturing

Odoo is open source and surprisingly capable for manufacturing. Its Work Center, Routing, and MRP modules handle most requirements for growing manufacturers. The UI is modern and intuitive. The biggest advantage is cost — Odoo Enterprise is dramatically less expensive than NetSuite or SAP B1.

Limitations: Odoo''s support ecosystem is less mature, and finding a qualified implementation partner for complex manufacturing scenarios requires care.

Decision Framework

Under $10M revenue, growing manufacturer: Odoo delivers the best value with capable manufacturing features at a much lower total cost.

$10M-$50M, discrete or light process manufacturing: NetSuite is a strong choice, especially if you need strong financials and multi-entity alongside manufacturing.

$20M+, complex manufacturing, high transaction volume: SAP Business One''s manufacturing maturity justifies the higher implementation cost.
